The Milwaukee Bucks appeared to be on the brink of extending their first-round series against the Indiana Pacers, holding a 118–111 lead with just 40 seconds remaining in overtime of Game 5. But in a stunning collapse, the Bucks surrendered eight straight points and were eliminated with a 119–118 loss — marking their third consecutive early playoff exit and the second straight year Indiana has sent them packing.
Despite the loss, Giannis Antetokounmpo turned in a dominant individual performance. The two-time MVP posted 30 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, two blocks, and two steals while shooting 52.9% from the field. Yet again, Antetokounmpo’s brilliance wasn’t enough to carry Milwaukee through the postseason.
As speculation grows around his future, NBA insider John Hollinger of The Athletic believes this could mark the end of Antetokounmpo’s tenure in Milwaukee — and the Houston Rockets are emerging as a strong potential landing spot.
Houston Rockets a Logical Trade Partner
According to Hollinger, the Bucks may be wise to pivot into a rebuild, and Houston offers the assets to kick-start that process. The Rockets own a stockpile of draft picks, including a 2025 lottery pick from the Phoenix Suns, along with unprotected Suns first-rounders in 2027 and 2029. They could also offer rising star Amen Thompson — a versatile, explosive young guard who’s drawn comparisons to a “mini-Giannis.”
Hollinger explained:
“The most obvious candidate is Houston. The Rockets can offer an electrifying mini-Giannis in Amen Thompson, salivating draft picks … and enough salary-matching flotsam to offset Antetokounmpo’s incoming $54.6 million and get a deal to the finish line.”
If Milwaukee chooses to hit the reset button, acquiring lottery picks and high-upside talent like Thompson could be the ideal way to start over.
Other Potential Destinations
While Houston stands out, they aren’t the only team that could pursue Antetokounmpo. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, and San Antonio Spurs have also been floated as possible destinations.
Among them, Oklahoma City — armed with a war chest of draft picks and a promising young core — would make the most sense if both parties are aiming for a competitive rebuild. San Antonio, with stars De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama, could be a dark horse contender. Brooklyn, on the other hand, lacks both the assets and fit, making it a less likely option.
What’s Next for Milwaukee?
Following another disappointing playoff run, the Bucks are facing major questions heading into the offseason. If a breakup with Giannis becomes a reality, Houston could offer the most compelling path forward.
Whether Milwaukee chooses to run it back or tear it down, one thing is certain — this summer will be pivotal in shaping the franchise’s future.
