Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala is set to face Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in the first round of the 2025 Madrid Open, where she has received a wildcard entry. If Eala overcomes Tomova, who is ranked 64th in the world, she will likely meet defending champion Iga Swiatek in the second round. Swiatek, currently world No. 2, has a first-round bye in the WTA1000 tournament.
Eala, ranked 72nd globally, gained widespread attention after her impressive run at the Miami Open, where she defeated Swiatek in the quarterfinals. This victory marked a significant milestone in her career, propelling her into the WTA Top 100. The Madrid Open draw also features notable players such as Madison Keys, Emma Navarro, Diana Shnaider, and Jelena Ostapenko, all of whom have had recent encounters with Eala.
Tomova, a 30-year-old player who reached a career-high ranking of 64 in July 2024, has won five of her nine singles matches this year. She was eliminated by Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open’s round of 64.
Eala is coming off a recent loss to Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in the round of 16 at the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal but remains a rising talent to watch as she competes in Madrid.
