The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to wait on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision about his NFL future. With that uncertainty looming, NFL analyst Rich Eisen has proposed a bold contingency plan: trading for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta during the 2024 offseason. However, Eisen speculated on The Rich Eisen Show that the Steelers could make a move if Rodgers turns them down.
“It’s more than just hoping Rodgers comes back — they need him,” Eisen said. “If he doesn’t sign, and the Steelers don’t want to start Mason Rudolph, then they should call Atlanta and offer a draft pick for Cousins. Maybe the third-rounder they just got for George Pickens. Or the 2027 fifth-round pick. Sweeten the deal, and bring Cousins in.”
Cousins had a mixed debut season with the Falcons, throwing for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and a career-high 16 interceptions in 14 games.
The Steelers’ quarterback situation remains precarious. If Rodgers doesn’t sign, they’ll likely have to rely on Rudolph, who struggled during a short stint with the Tennessee Titans, recording just one win in five starts.
Meanwhile, the Steelers recently traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder. Pittsburgh also sent a 2027 sixth-round pick in the deal.
Some speculated the trade might dissuade Rodgers from joining the team, but Steelers insider Gerry Dulac reported it’s not expected to impact the veteran QB’s decision.
Rodgers was released by the New York Jets on March 12, and Pittsburgh reportedly made a contract offer the next day. Still, the four-time MVP has not committed to the team, leaving the Steelers’ plans in limbo heading into the 2025 season.
