Lewis Hamilton Opens Up About Breaking the Mold in F1: “I Didn’t Feel Like I Could Be Myself

Lewis Hamilton is not only a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion—he’s also a trailblazer in personal expression. In a recent reflection, Hamilton opened up about how he struggled early in his F1 career to fit into the sport’s rigid expectations, particularly when it came to his fashion choices.

Starting his career with McLaren under Ron Dennis’ leadership, Hamilton recalled feeling boxed in by team protocols that restricted him to wearing only suits and team kits. While expected attire in the paddock may have matched the sport’s traditional image, it didn’t reflect who he was.

“It was horrible,” Hamilton shared. “I didn’t feel comfortable, and I didn’t feel like I was able to be myself.”

Determined to reclaim his identity, Hamilton began pushing back—first subtly, then boldly—by wearing his own outfits to the track. The decision came with significant pushback, but he stood firm.

“I started taking the risk,” he told Times Life & Style. “Even though I wasn’t allowed to, I just did it. Eventually, people saw the positive effect it was having. I had to break some rules.”

Today, Hamilton’s bold paddock looks are a staple of race weekends and have even inspired a new wave of driver expression. Young stars like Zhou Guanyu have publicly credited him for paving the way.

In a candid interview with Vogue, Hamilton recounted a moment before his F1 debut when a team boss disapproved of his outfit.

“I was probably in FUBU and Timbs,” he laughed. “I remember thinking, ‘Shoot, I’ve really got to fit into this mould.’ Even my dad expected me to.”

He recalled how he used to change outfits in secret—leaving the house in team-approved clothes, only to switch into something more reflective of his style before heading out with friends. It wasn’t until he gained more confidence and security in the sport that he insisted on dressing authentically, even if it meant breaking convention.

“I told them, ‘I’m here now—you can’t get rid of me or change how I dress.’”

That decision changed more than his personal comfort—it set a new tone for the sport. Today, fashion and individuality are more accepted in the paddock, thanks largely to Hamilton’s persistence.

As Formula 1 continues to evolve into a global cultural phenomenon, Hamilton’s influence on and off the track continues to shape how drivers express themselves beyond their lap times.
