Former Formula 1 race winner Jochen Mass has died at the age of 78, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the FIA and the wider motorsport world.
Mass’ family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, revealing that the German racing legend passed away due to complications following a stroke he suffered in February.
“Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, and a racing legend,” the statement read. “Jochen Mass passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. The incredible support and positive messages he received brought him comfort in his final days.”
The family added: “We grieve his passing, but we also celebrate a life fully lived—one filled with adventure, passion, and unforgettable moments. He is now racing once more with his old friends.”
Celebrating an Iconic Career
Jochen Mass made his Formula 1 debut in 1973 and competed regularly until 1980, returning briefly in 1982. His most notable moment came at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, where he claimed his sole F1 victory for McLaren—a race tragically marred by a fatal accident that claimed four lives.
Throughout his F1 career, Mass earned eight podiums, all with McLaren. However, his success extended beyond Formula 1. He became a formidable force in sportscar racing, winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989 and notching 32 victories in world championship events.
