F1 Champion Max Verstappen Secretly Tests Ferrari GT3 at Nürburgring

Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has been spotted behind the wheel of a Ferrari — but not in the way fans might expect.

In a surprising twist, Verstappen participated in an official GT3 test at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife on Friday, piloting a Ferrari 296 GT3 under the radar. The Red Bull Racing star completed several laps in the 600-horsepower machine as part of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) setup sessions.

To keep the test low-profile, Verstappen attempted to go incognito, racing under the alias “Franz Hermann” — a name seen on the side of the Ferrari during the session. However, his efforts to remain undercover didn’t go unnoticed. According to Auto Motor und Sport, those in attendance recognized the Dutchman, as his real name was still visible on both his helmet and overalls.

Security around the event was tight. Verstappen’s personal bodyguards were present, and outside photographers were barred from entering the garage to ensure his privacy.

A Real Run at the Nordschleife?

While Verstappen has taken part in NLS races virtually in the past, this private test suggests he’s eyeing a move onto the real Nordschleife track. Reports indicate that Verstappen intends to secure a Nordschleife permit this year — a crucial step in qualifying to compete in high-level events like the famed Nürburgring 24 Hours.

Verstappen has long expressed admiration for the Nordschleife. Speaking at a virtual NLS event last year, he said:
“The Nürburgring Nordschleife is one of my absolute favourite race tracks, and I hope that in a few years I can also compete here with a real GT3.”

This private Ferrari test could mark the beginning of that dream becoming a reality.

Growing GT3 Ambitions

Verstappen isn’t just dabbling — he’s investing deeply in GT3 racing. His own team, Verstappen.com Racing, has broadened its footprint in 2025, joining series like GT World Challenge Europe (both Sprint and Endurance formats) and the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters).

As the F1 season continues, it’s clear Verstappen’s passion for racing extends far beyond single-seaters — and his latest Ferrari GT3 test may be a sign of thrilling things to come.
