Ex-F1 Driver Predicts Lewis Hamilton Will Walk Away from Ferrari: “It’s Not a Winning Team”

Lewis Hamilton’s future at Ferrari is already under scrutiny, with former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari boldly predicting the seven-time World Champion will eventually leave the team — calling Ferrari “not a winning team.”

Hamilton, who made a sensational switch from Mercedes to Ferrari for the 2025 season, has had a mixed start with the Scuderia. Although he secured a sprint race victory in China, he has yet to outperform team-mate Charles Leclerc in a Grand Prix, and his struggles with qualifying pace — trailing by six-tenths in Bahrain and half a second in Saudi Arabia — have fueled concerns.

Reflecting on Hamilton’s challenging start and visibly downbeat interviews, Alguersuari didn’t hold back during his appearance on The After Lap Podcast.

“I have the feeling Hamilton is going to leave,” Alguersuari said. “I don’t know why, maybe I’m taking a risk by saying this, but it feels like his time has passed. He’s already won everything. Maybe he joined Ferrari thinking, ‘Let’s see what happens in 2026.’”

Ferrari’s lack of recent championship success weighs heavily in Alguersuari’s prediction. The team last won the Constructors’ Championship in 2008, and their most recent Drivers’ title was back in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen.

“Ferrari may have a competitive car and team,” Alguersuari explained, “but they are not a winning team. There’s a big difference.”

Hamilton is under contract with Ferrari until at least the end of 2026. However, mounting frustrations are clear, with the British driver hinting at impatience with the team’s leadership and his own performances.

Despite the rocky start, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur remains fully behind Hamilton, highlighting the long-standing bond between the two. Vasseur, who helped guide Hamilton to success in Formula 3 and GP2, promised full support.

“I will be 2,000 percent behind him,” Vasseur told media, including PlanetF1.com, after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. “We’re working together to fix the car’s balance and tyre issues. The potential is there — we just need to unlock it.”

Hamilton currently sits P7 in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing Leclerc by 16 points and two positions.

Still, with early frustrations mounting, questions are swirling about whether Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari dream will truly last.
