Carlos Alcaraz has cast serious doubt on his participation in the upcoming Madrid Open, revealing that he’s still dealing with physical discomfort and awaiting results from recent medical tests.
Speaking on the Spanish talk show El Hormiguero Wednesday night, the world No. 3 said:
“At the start of the week, I thought I’d be feeling better. But right now, my participation in Madrid is up in the air. I’m physically a little worn out. I need to listen to my body.”
According to journalist Juanma Castaño, Alcaraz is expected to confirm his withdrawal at a scheduled press conference later today at 12:30 p.m.
The 21-year-old also opened up about the toll that elite tennis takes on his body and mind, especially when managing in-match cramps:
“I’ve had cramps in my legs and arms. It’s mostly nerves, the heat, hydration—but above all, the nerves… Against Sinner, I handled it better than against Djokovic. But it hit me again in the final with Zverev.”
Despite the physical challenges, Alcaraz showed his lighter side on the show, joking about his party habits and his drink of choice—gin and lemon. He also shared moments from his new Netflix documentary, which gives fans an inside look at his life both on and off the court.
Recalling a humorous moment at Wimbledon, he said he once got in trouble for wearing the wrong underwear—highlighting the strict dress code of the All England Club.
Alcaraz remains one of tennis’ most exciting young stars, but for now, fans in Madrid may have to wait a bit longer to see him back in action.
