The Alpine Formula 1 team continues to face turbulence following the sudden resignation of team principal Oliver Oakes, which came just two days after a disappointing performance at the Miami Grand Prix.
Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s executive director and former F1 team boss, has stepped in as interim team principal. However, his return to the helm has sparked controversy. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher questioned the decision, voicing concerns about Briatore’s suitability for the demanding role.
“In his previous role, Flavio did well given his experience, but he’s too old now to be actively managing the team day-to-day,” Schumacher told Sky Sports Germany. “He’ll always do things his own way — and that may have played a part in Oakes stepping down. From what I hear, Flavio is trying to do everything himself. I hope that’s not true.”
The leadership shake-up comes as Alpine attempts to regain its footing after a difficult start to the 2025 season.
Colapinto Replaces Doohan Amid Performance Concerns
The team also confirmed a major driver change, announcing that Franco Colapinto will replace Jack Doohan for the next five races. Doohan, one of only four drivers yet to score a point this season, has struggled since stepping in to replace Esteban Ocon. His best result in the first six races was 13th place.
Colapinto, 21, joins the race lineup after impressing during a stint with Williams in 2024. He joined Alpine as a reserve driver during the off-season and will now make his debut at the upcoming Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
Alpine is currently enduring one of its worst seasons in recent years, with only seven points on the board — all scored by Pierre Gasly — leaving the team second from bottom in the constructors’ standings.
