World No. 3 Forced to Skip Madrid After Adductor Strain from Barcelona Final Loss to Rune
Carlos Alcaraz has officially pulled out of the 2025 Madrid Open due to an adductor injury sustained during his defeat to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final last weekend.
The 21-year-old two-time Madrid champion was set to begin his campaign on Friday, aiming for a third straight title, but confirmed in a Thursday press conference that his recovery takes priority. Alcaraz, who was drawn in the same half as Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper, expressed disappointment at missing the beloved home tournament.
“I’m really disappointed I’m not able to play here in Madrid. It’s a place I really love playing,” Alcaraz shared. “It was a difficult decision, but sometimes you have to listen to your body.”
Despite the setback, the Spaniard remains optimistic. He revealed that his medical team estimates a recovery time of one to two weeks and emphasized his determination to return for the Rome Masters on May 7. If that timeline proves too soon, Alcaraz confirmed that Roland Garros — where he is the defending champion — remains his next target.
“I believe it’s going to take one week, one week and a half, two weeks maximum,” he said. “I will do everything it takes to be ready.”
In Barcelona, Alcaraz had started strong but struggled after taking a medical timeout early in the second set, ultimately losing 7-6, 6-2 to Rune — a defeat that ended his impressive nine-match winning streak.
As fans await his return, Alcaraz has been busy off-court, recently launching his new Netflix documentary series in Madrid.
Stay tuned for updates on his recovery and preparations for the clay court season’s key events, including the French Open beginning May 25.
