As the NBA offseason approaches, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly eyeing a big man to pair with Luka Doncic. Two names have emerged as realistic trade targets: Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton and Dallas Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford, a former teammate of Doncic.
According to Lakers insider Jovan Buha, Claxton is considered LA’s “best option,” while Gafford ranks as a strong runner-up.
Claxton, known for his defensive versatility, is entering the second year of a four-year, $97 million contract, earning $25.2 million next season. Gafford, meanwhile, is a more budget-friendly option. He’s on a three-year, $40.18 million deal, with a $13.4 million salary for 2024–25—giving the Lakers more financial flexibility.
Lakers fans have been actively debating the pros and cons of both players on social media. Claxton’s defensive upside and overall skillset make him an appealing choice, while Gafford’s athleticism and prior chemistry with Doncic also draw interest.
One fan wrote:
“Claxton is a far better player than Gafford.”
Another chimed in:
“Claxton definitely. Gafford is cheeks without Luka.”
But not everyone agrees. Some believe Gafford’s fit alongside Doncic is proven:
“That Luka and Gafford chemistry is proven.”
Despite the split, most fans appear to favor Claxton as the stronger all-around option.
The Trade Price Won’t Be Cheap
Landing either Claxton or Gafford will likely require the Lakers to give up valuable assets. Claxton still has three years left on his deal, giving the Nets strong leverage. Gafford, with just one year left, could be more attainable—but Dallas would still expect significant value in return.
Both players could cost at least one first-round pick and possibly a young prospect like Dalton Knecht. The Lakers only have one first-round pick (2031) available to trade outright. The others—2026, 2028, and 2030—are tied up in potential pick swaps.
Given their limited draft capital, the Lakers might have to consider including a core player like Austin Reaves to sweeten the deal. But Reaves is viewed as a key contributor, especially with his team-friendly contract.
With these challenges in mind, all eyes will be on how the Lakers approach their search for a reliable center this offseason.
