Lewis Hamilton Opens Up About Emotional ‘Labour of Love’ Project Beyond F1

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton recently shared personal insights into a project close to his heart — far from the roar of the racetrack.

After a whirlwind weekend at the Miami Grand Prix, where Hamilton secured a podium finish in the sprint race but settled for eighth in the main event, the 40-year-old racing legend quickly shifted gears — this time for fashion’s biggest night: the 2025 Met Gala.

Despite voicing frustrations with Ferrari’s race strategy over team radio — in true British sarcastic style — Hamilton put the disappointment behind him as he stepped into a different spotlight on Monday.

Hamilton’s Deeply Personal Met Gala Appearance

Invited to serve as a co-chair for this year’s Met Gala by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Hamilton joined stars like Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and A$AP Rocky in celebrating the theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The event paid homage to the rich legacy of Black fashion and dandyism.

Dressed in a striking custom ensemble by British designer Grace Wales Bonner, Hamilton turned heads — not just for the fashion but for the cultural story it told.

Taking to social media, he paid tribute to Wales Bonner and their months-long collaboration:
“From the moment I heard the theme of this year’s Met Gala, I knew I wanted to work with Grace Wales Bonner. This look has taken months of research and development. Every detail has been deeply considered—there’s a lot of emotion and meaning woven into this. This is more than a suit, this is ancestral history. Stylish, spiritual, and sharp. Thank you, Grace.”

A Look Filled With Symbolism

According to Wales Bonner, the design drew on powerful historical and cultural symbols — including baobab flower motifs, cowrie shells, and mother-of-pearl buttons. “There are stories told through jewel adornments and special trims,” she explained in an interview with Vogue.

Hamilton’s stylist, Eric McNeal, emphasized the care that went into the ensemble, saying: “What makes it special is that it’s not just about fashion – it’s about meaning. Lewis really wanted there to be a reason and a story behind every detail.”

Though busy with his debut season at Ferrari, Hamilton remained actively involved in the Met Gala preparations, guided by Wintour and committed to ensuring every element reflected purpose and heritage.

This latest project shows another side of Hamilton — not just the fierce competitor on the circuit but a passionate advocate for representation and cultural storytelling through style.
