Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton continues to broaden his impact beyond the racetrack—this time, stepping into the world of high fashion. Hamilton is serving as a co-chair for the 2025 Met Gala, which takes place today, Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. ET at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Met Gala is one of the most prestigious annual fashion events, drawing global icons from music, film, fashion, sports, and pop culture. Each year, it’s centered around a specific theme that challenges attendees to push creative boundaries with their attire. Past themes have included Punk: Chaos to Couture, Camp: Notes on Fashion, and Heavenly Bodies.

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” pays tribute to Black culture and fashion, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

Hamilton joins fellow co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and honorary chair LeBron James. Longtime Met Gala lead and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour also returns to her traditional co-hosting role.

What Does Hamilton’s Co-Chair Role Involve?

Hamilton, who made his Met Gala debut in 2015, has been increasingly active in the fashion scene. At the 2021 Gala, he bought an entire table to spotlight emerging Black designers. His influence has grown steadily since, culminating in a partnership with Dior as a brand ambassador in 2024.

As a Met Gala co-chair, Hamilton helps shape the event’s creative direction, including red carpet experience, decor, and even the menu. While some co-chairs perform or speak during the evening’s program, their main role is to collaborate with Wintour to craft the night’s atmosphere and message.

Celebrating Black Excellence

The 2025 host committee continues the theme of elevating Black voices, featuring Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, actress Ayo Edebiri, rapper Doechii, singer Tyla, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and playwright Jeremy O. Harris. Music icons Usher, Janelle Monáe, and André 3000 are also on board.

Ahead of the event, Vogue and GQ partnered to spotlight the host committee in a series of editorial photoshoots.
